Björk: Biophilia

This singular artist's unique trajectory continues. Biophilia swings between dazzlingly technicolored soundscapes, both earthy and alien— which give platform for Björk's unmistakable vocal flights—and shudderingly unpredictable percussion experiments that show off her fascination with dubstep (those in the know are aware this is not a new thing for her). In between lie perfect, futuristic pop songs—torch songs lit by another sun?—such as "Thunderbolt," a swirl of artistry so rich and ahead of things that even Sun Ra might've approved. "Crystalline" tinkles along as per its title, until the final moment, which explodes in a ragga-murda flurry of beats. "Hollow" incorporates a muted pulse and heady synths (again, makes us think of what Sun Ra might like to hear in 2011), while "Sacrifice" sees Björk dancing atop a frozen lake's shattered ice shards. It'll make sense when you hear it—and that, ultimately, could be the best way to describe Björk's love of life, this Biophilia.
