We’ve had garage rock revivals in the past, but nothing quite like the Black Lips. This band is the real deal, folks. After putting out several fine but underappreciated full-lengths and a legendary string of shows at this year’s South by Southwest, the Black Lips have officially arrived with Good Bad Not Evil, a deliriously fun but of jagged Nuggets-inspired rock that nimbly manages to sound original and retro all at once. Chalk that neat feat up to fine songwriting (deliciously dark lyrics) and a deft display of eclectic styles, from country twang to punk. And it’s loaded with hooks, style, humor and charm. Pure fun.
