Blonde Redhead: Penny Sparkle
Label: 4AD
Fifteen years and eight albums in, Blonde Redhead continues to evolve and expand its range, and -- most important -- write great songs. Building on the lush dream-pop of 2007's excellent 23, Penny Sparkle retains the dreamlike quality but tones down the guitars in favor of a chill electro-pop vibe. The haunting, often minimal arrangements give the songs room to breathe and let Kazu Makino's gorgeous vocals shine. Opening track "Here Sometimes" sets the album's wistful, mesmerizing tone, with Makino purring "I'm only here sometimes" over a clattering electronic beat and warm waves of synthesizers. Subtle, evocative, and skillfully wrought, Penny Sparkle shows that Blonde Redhead can satisfy old fans while winning new ones with every release. (Kiri)
