Boris: Attention Please

Label: Sargent House

And for their second set (see also: Heavy Rocks), Boris will play it a little sultry. I mean, look at the cover; lead-guitarist Wata is all dolled up and she's playing it to the hilt, taking lead vocals on all ten songs here. Attention Please, as its name suggests, draws you a bit closer, and even whispers stuff in your ear. Boris in come-hither mode accents the bottom end and lays off the guitars a bit; like a lot of the songs, the opening title track pushes forward mostly on just a kick drum and hi-hat, while Wata coos and purrs (that's right, that's what I said). "Hope" strikes a classic early-'90s shoegaze vibe better and with more reverence than most contemporary bands working that side of the street (there's a similar song on Heavy Rocks). They also toss in a scorching, seconds-brief metal-guitar solo. "Party Boy" cruises along the Strip in a convertible, and Boris acknowledges the cartoonishness of such a move with a -- what is that, electric kazoo? "Aileron" is a two-minute trip of softly plucked electric-guitar strings, glassy like the surface of a lake, and with a rippling movement as well. Hey Boris -- you've got our attention.
