A fabulous and lush new album by Ben Chasny, a.k.a. Six Organs of Admittance. On this album, his second for the always reliable Drag City, Chasney takes us on many musical voyages into the lands of experimental folk, rock, drone, psychedelic overdrive, fingerpickin’ Americana and truly far-reaching cosmic ecstasy via his breathtaking vocal presence. On this disc, he is joined by fellow Comets on Fire member Noel Von Harmonson, Tim Green of the Fucking Champs (who also beautifully recorded and produced the album), Pete Swanson of Yellow Swans and several more like-minded souls to realize a majestic vibe that I can’t help but compare to the glorious work of Popul Vuh. Yes, there is just something so vast and magically open about these sounds; it’s totally transportive, but to where, I can’t really say, but I dig… This has all the appeal of classic acid-folk, with swell doses of ethnic embellishments, electronic flourishes, and out-psychedelia. It references enough of that legendary 60’s-70’s freak-era while incorporating healthy doses of the current New Weird America/free-folk/new-noise genres to melt you into bliss. Highly recommended!
