Named for the long-ago night on which three of its four tracks of sparsely populated ambience were made, 92982 is another archival recording from composer William Basinski‘s vaults that’ll have you wondering why it’s emerging only now. Basinski is one of the all-time greats at creating a boundary-free sound field (headphones are recommended, unless you have a reliably up-to-it stereo set-up), through which flecks of disintegrated memories and threads move, scatter, scamper and saunter in stately motion. More than most other comparable artists, Basinski succeeds in suggesting a knowable system with his minimalist music—no matter how abstracted, it creates its own logic, making sense without trading out mood.
